Instructions
Rinse the cranberries under cold water and remove any damaged berries.
In a medium saucepan, combine water and sugar over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
Add the rinsed cranberries to the saucepan and stir to coat them with the syrup.
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, allowing the cranberries to burst (about 5-7 minutes).
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens.
If using, add orange zest and ground cinnamon during the last few minutes of cooking.
Remove from heat and let the sauce cool to room temperature before transferring to a serving dish.
Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary, then refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.
