  • 1 pound Ground Beef Use high-quality ground beef with an 80/20 meat-to-fat ratio.
  • 2 large Yellow Onions Thinly sliced for even caramelization.
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Use low-sodium broth to control seasoning.
  • 1 cup Gruyère Cheese Grated, can substitute with Swiss cheese.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil For sautéing the onions.
  • to taste Salt For seasoning.
  • to taste Black Pepper Freshly cracked for seasoning.
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh Thyme Leaves Adds aromatic flavor.
  • 4 pieces Hamburger Buns Optional, for traditional presentation.

Instructions
 

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add olive oil.
  • Add sliced onions and season with salt. Cook on medium-low heat until caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
  • In a mixing bowl, season ground beef with salt, pepper, and thyme. Form into four patties.
  • Once onions are caramelized, add beef broth and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • Cook patties in another skillet or grill for 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  • In the last minute of cooking, sprinkle cheese on patties and cover to melt.
  • Assemble by placing a patty on a plate and spooning caramelized onions over the top.
  • Serve with toasted hamburger buns on the side if desired.

Notes

Store leftovers separately in airtight containers. Beef patties can be refrigerated for up to three days.
