Ingredients
  

Onions

  • 3 large Yellow Onions Peeled and thinly sliced.

Oil

  • 3 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil For cooking the onions.

Salt

  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt To enhance flavor.

Sugar

  • 1 teaspoon Sugar (optional) To speed up caramelization.

Liquid

  • 2 tablespoons Water or Broth (optional) For deglazing the pan.

Instructions
 

  • Peel and thinly slice the onions.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  • Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with salt.
  • Stir gently to coat the onions in oil, then reduce heat to low.
  • Cook onions, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  • If onions stick, add water or broth to deglaze the pan.
  • If desired, add sugar and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes.
  • Adjust seasoning if necessary, then remove from heat.
  • Let cool slightly before using or storing in an airtight container.

Notes

Store leftover caramelized onions in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.
