Instructions
Peel and thinly slice the onions.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with salt.
Stir gently to coat the onions in oil, then reduce heat to low.
Cook onions, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
If onions stick, add water or broth to deglaze the pan.
If desired, add sugar and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes.
Adjust seasoning if necessary, then remove from heat.
