Start by rinsing the basmati rice. Place the rice in a fine mesh strainer and hold it under cold running water. As you swish the rice gently with your hand, you’ll see the water become murky. Continue this for 1 to 2 minutes to remove excess starch.
If you prefer, you can also place the rice in a medium bowl, covering it with enough water to rise 2 inches above the grains. Swish the rice with your hands, releasing any excess starch. Carefully pour off the water, leaving the rice in the bowl, and repeat this process four times or until the water runs almost clear.
After rinsing, transfer the washed basmati rice to a medium pot. Add 1¾ cups of water, 1½ tablespoons of unsalted butter, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Stir gently to combine.
Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep an eye on it, as you want to avoid any spillage.
Once boiling, cover the pot tightly with a lid and reduce the heat to low. This simmering stage is crucial for cooking the rice evenly.
Let the rice simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when all the water is absorbed, and the rice grains are tender. If, after 15 minutes, the rice seems too firm, add a few more tablespoons of water and continue cooking for a couple more minutes.
Once the rice is cooked, remove the pot from the heat. Let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. This resting time allows the grains to firm up.
Fluff the rice using a fork, gently separating the grains. This step is essential for that perfect fluffy texture.
Serve the rice warm as a delicious side dish to your favorite meal. Enjoy the compliments!
