Equipment

  • Wooden Spoon
  • Grater
  • Frying Pan
  • Saucepan
  • Cutting Board
  • Large Pot

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup finely diced onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 cup uncooked long grain rice

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Let the butter melt completely, allowing it to bubble gently. This process releases a nutty aroma that fills the kitchen.
  • Add the finely diced onion to the saucepan. Stir frequently and cook until it becomes tender and translucent, which typically takes about five minutes. The sweetness of the onion will start to develop at this point.
  • Next, stir in the grated orange zest. This will create an amazing aroma that complements the cooking onion. Let it cook for about a minute to release the oils.
  • Pour in the water and orange juice. Stir to combine, and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. You should see bubbles starting to form at the edges of the pan.
  • Once boiling, add the salt and dried thyme. These components enhance the flavor profile, bringing depth to the dish. Give the mixture a good stir.
  • Now, add the uncooked long grain rice to the pot. Stir it in so it's evenly distributed in the liquid. Bring the pot back to a boil.
  • Once boiling, cover the saucepan with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for twenty minutes. During this time, the rice will absorb all the flavorful liquid.
  • After twenty minutes, turn off the heat but keep the lid on. Let it sit for an additional five minutes. This step allows the rice to fluff up beautifully.
  • Finally, remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the rice. This step is essential as it separates the grains, allowing you to enjoy the delicious flavors more fully. Serve warm and enjoy!
