  • 1 pound Ground Beef Lean ground beef works best to avoid excess grease.
  • 3 large Onions Preferably yellow or sweet onions, sliced thinly.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced for flavor enhancement.
  • 2 cups Beef Broth Low-sodium is recommended for better control of saltiness.
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheese Gruyère or mozzarella for melting and flavor.
  • 1 cup French Fried Onions For topping, adds crunch and flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt To taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper To taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme Enhances flavor profile.
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil For sautéing onions and garlic.

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes until caramelized.
  • Add minced garlic to the caramelized onions and sauté for an additional 2 minutes.
  • In a separate skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it into small pieces until no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  • Combine the caramelized onions and garlic with the browned beef. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
  • Pour in the beef broth and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the beef mixture, then half of the cheese. Repeat with remaining mixture and cheese.
  • Top with French fried onions. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Consider adding vegetables for extra nutrition or using different cheeses for variety.
