Ingredients
  

  • 12 slices French bread Use day-old bread for the best texture.
  • 4 cups milk Evaporated or whole milk adds richness.
  • 4 large eggs Essential for binding the custard.
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar For sweetness and browning.
  • 1.5 tablespoons lemon zest Grated for a fresh flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds depth to the flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Balances sweetness.
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar For sprinkling on top before baking.
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon For a warm, spiced flavor.

Instructions
 

  • Evenly divide the bread slices between two greased 9x13-inch baking dishes. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the milk, eggs, sugar, lemon zest, vanilla, and salt. Pour evenly over the bread. Let it soak for five minutes. Turn the bread slices over. Cover and chill for 12 hours (or overnight).
  • Before serving, preheat the oven to 325° F. In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the bread.
  • Bake, uncovered, 35 to 45 minutes, until crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Serve immediately with powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or syrup.

Notes

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Reheat in the oven for the best texture.
