Equipment

  • Microwave

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons All-purpose flour Flour gives the cake structure and stability. It helps absorb moisture which results in a lighter cake texture.
  • 4 tablespoons Sugar Regular granulated white sugar provides the sweetness, but you can use your favorite alternative sweetener.
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened cocoa powder A few tablespoons provide the flavor and color in this chocolate mug cake recipe.
  • 1 8 Baking powder A small amount of baking powder helps lighten the cake's texture.
  • a pinch Salt The primary reason to add salt in baking is to enhance the flavor of the other ingredients.
  • 2 tablespoons Brewed coffee Do not skip the coffee! It adds a deeper chocolate flavor.
  • 4 tablespoons Milk This is ideal because it removes bitterness and adds fat and sweetness.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Although you can use vegetable oil, we prefer butter because it makes the cake taste much better.
  • 2 tablespoons Chocolate chips We like to use mini chocolate chips to double the chocolate flavor, but they are optional.

Instructions

  • Whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large microwave-safe mug.
  • Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Mix in the chocolate chips (or other add-ins).
  • Microwave on high for around one to two minutes, regularly checking after one minute for doneness.

Notes

  • Storage: To store any leftovers, cover the mug with plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge for up to two days.
  • Freezing: You can freeze the batter in a mug for later use. Just microwave it when you’re ready to indulge.
  • Serving variations: Serve your cake warm or cold, and try it with toppings like whipped cream, ice cream, or fresh berries.
  • Dietary adjustments: Make it gluten-free by substituting flour with a gluten-free blend.
  • Personalize your cake: Add your favorite nuts or dried fruits to enhance flavor and texture.
