Instructions
 

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Punch down the risen dough, divide into pieces, and roll each into a rope about 12 inches long.
  • Flatten each rope, place cheese in the center, fold over, and seal edges.
  • Boil water with baking soda, then boil each pretzel for 30 seconds on each side.
  • Brush pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
