Equipment

  • Wooden Spoon
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Skillet
  • Chef's Knife
  • Whisk

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 4 slices French bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and mix well. Set the filling aside to allow the flavors to meld together.
  • In a shallow bowl or pie plate, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream until fully combined. This mixture will create a rich coating for the bread.
  • Spread about ½ cup of the ricotta mixture on 2 slices of the French bread. Place the remaining slices on top, creating sandwiches, and gently press them together to seal.
  • Carefully dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, making sure to coat both sides well. You want the bread to soak up the egg to ensure a lovely custard-like texture.
  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. The skillet should be hot enough that a drop of water sizzles when added. This is crucial for achieving that golden crust.
  • Add the stuffed sandwiches to the skillet, cooking until they’re golden brown and crispy, about 4 minutes per side. Keep an eye on them to avoid burning!
  • Once cooked, carefully cut the sandwiches in half on the diagonal. This not only makes them easier to serve but also reveals the luscious filling inside.
  • Transfer to plates and dust with powdered sugar for an elegant finish. Serve immediately while they’re warm and inviting.
