Equipment

  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

  • 2 green plantains
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil melted
  • ¾ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. This is an important step as you want a hot oven to achieve crispy chips. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  • Start preparing the plantains. Cut off the ends and score the skins lengthwise to make peeling easier. The skin can be tough, so don’t rush this part.
  • Once peeled, slice each plantain diagonally into thin slices. Aim for uniformity in size to ensure even baking. The thinner the slice, the crispier the chip will be!
  • In a bowl, brush both sides of the slices with melted coconut oil. Make sure to coat them well, as this oil will help achieve that golden-brown color.
  • Arrange the slices on the prepared baking sheets, making sure they are in a single layer without overlapping. Overcrowding will steam the chips instead of baking them.
  • Sprinkle the salt evenly over the slices. Adjust according to your taste preferences, but remember that the salt enhances the natural sweetness of the plantains.
  • Place the sheets in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 to 25 minutes. Keep an eye on them; around 15 minutes in, rotate the baking sheets and flip the chips to ensure even browning.
  • Check for readiness by observing the color. You want a light golden-brown, but be careful not to let them burn. They should be crisp to the touch.
  • Once done, carefully remove the chips from the oven. Allow them to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a serving dish. This helps them firm up nicely as they cool.
  • Enjoy your Baked Plantain Chips warm or at room temperature! They make an excellent snack on their own or with your favorite dip.

Notes

  • Storage: Store any leftover chips in an airtight container at room temperature. They can lose their crispness if stored improperly.
  • Freezing: You can freeze the uncooked slices for later use. Just thaw and bake straight from the freezer.
  • Variations: Experiment with different seasonings to create exciting flavor profiles.
  • Pairing: Try serving these chips with guacamole, salsa, or a yogurt dip for a refreshing contrast.
