Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 4-5 slices bread day old is ideal
  • 2 large eggs
  • cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream optional
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  • Start by slicing your bread into thirds or fourths, depending on how wide your slices are. Aim for pieces that are about one and a half to two inches wide. This will ensure they cook evenly and are easy to manage.
  • In a small bowl, combine the eggs, milk, and vanilla. Whisk the mixture vigorously until it’s well-blended and slightly frothy. This will help create a light and airy texture when cooked.
  • Take each slice of bread and dip it into the egg mixture, making sure to coat both sides thoroughly. Let any excess dip off to avoid sogginess. The goal is to saturate without over-soaking.
  • Prepare your air fryer basket by lining it with parchment paper and giving it a light spray of oil. This will prevent sticking and help achieve that lovely golden color.
  • Place the dipped bread slices in the air fryer basket, making sure they aren’t touching. If you have a lot of slices, work in batches to ensure even cooking.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Once it’s ready, cook each batch for about four minutes. Keep an eye on them; you want the edges to turn a light golden brown.
  • After four minutes, flip each slice carefully and cook for an additional two to four minutes. This will help them crisp up on both sides. You’ll know they’re done when they’re golden and crispy.
  • Once cooked, remove the sticks from the air fryer. In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon. Toss the warm sticks in this mixture to coat them evenly.
  • Enjoy your Air Fryer French Toast Sticks warm, perhaps with a side of syrup or fresh fruit. They’re perfect for dipping and sharing!

Notes

  • Air Fryer Variability: Not all air fryers cook the same. Mine cooks quickly, so keep an eye on your sticks the first time you try this recipe.
  • Stale Bread Advantage: Using stale bread adds flavor and helps the sticks hold up better, reducing the risk of sogginess.
  • Freezing for Convenience: You can freeze these Air Fryer French Toast Sticks for up to three months. Just reheat them in the air fryer or microwave when you need a quick breakfast.
  • Perfect for Kids: Kids love finger foods, and these are a fun way to get them excited about breakfast.
