Equipment

  • Grater
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Skillet
  • Air Fryer
  • Food Processor

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Self-Rising Flour
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup Frozen Butter

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your air fryer to 180C/350F. This ensures that your biscuits cook evenly and develop a beautiful golden color. It’s essential to have the right temperature before placing your dough in.
  • Sift the self-rising flour into a mixing bowl. This step helps aerate the flour, ensuring your biscuits rise light and fluffy. It may seem small, but it makes a significant difference in texture.
  • Next, take your frozen butter and using a box grater, grate it directly into the bowl with the flour. This method allows the butter to blend into the flour perfectly without becoming too warm.
  • Using your hands, gently mix the butter with the flour, ensuring the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Be careful not to overwork the dough; you want to keep that flaky texture.
  • Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Mix everything together until just combined. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  • Lightly flour a clean kitchen surface. Transfer the dough onto it and gently knead it several times. Be cautious not to over-knead; you want the biscuits to remain tender.
  • Roll the dough flat, aiming for about one inch in thickness. This thickness is ideal for biscuits as it allows them to rise well while still cooking through.
  • Using a biscuit cutter or a large cookie cutter, cut out the biscuits from the rolled-out dough. The key is to press straight down without twisting, which helps them rise evenly.
  • Generously grease your air fryer basket to prevent sticking. Place four biscuits in the basket, ensuring they are lightly touching. This helps them form a lovely crust as they cook.
  • Air fry the biscuits for 9 to 10 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Keep an eye on them; every air fryer is a little different. You’re looking for that perfect golden hue!
  • Once cooked, remove the biscuits from the air fryer and repeat the process with the remaining dough. Enjoy these warm, flaky biscuits fresh out of the air fryer!

Notes

  • Storage: Place leftover biscuits in an airtight container and keep them at room temperature for three days or up to one week in the fridge.
  • Freezing: Place the cooked and cooled buttermilk biscuits in a freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to 6 months.
  • Cooking Time Adjustment: If you use frozen biscuits, increase the cooking time by 6 minutes.
  • Refrigerated Dough: If you use refrigerated biscuit dough (like Pillsbury Grands biscuits), the cooking time will remain the same.
