Duchess Potatoes

Duchess Potatoes are an elegant twist on classic mashed potatoes, featuring piped swirls of buttery, seasoned potatoes baked to golden perfection. With a crisp exterior and creamy, melt-in-your-mouth interior, they make a stunning side dish for holiday feasts, dinner parties, or anytime you want to elevate your meal.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Creamy and Flavourful Duchess Potatoes:
  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 2 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
  • Optional Enhancements:
  • Paprika for dusting
  • Grated Parmesan or Gruyère cheese (halal certified), for added richness

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potato Base: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well and return to the pot.
  2. Mash and Enrich the Potatoes: Using a potato ricer or masher, mash the hot potatoes until completely smooth. Stir in softened butter, milk (or heavy cream), lightly beaten egg yolks, nutmeg, salt, and white pepper until well combined and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. Pipe the Potatoes: Transfer the potato mixture to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe decorative swirls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
  4. Bake to Golden Perfection: Optionally, brush with melted butter or egg wash for extra browning, and sprinkle with paprika or grated cheese. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crisp on the edges.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Serve Duchess Potatoes immediately as an elegant side dish for any meal.

Notes

For a make-ahead option, pipe the potatoes onto a baking sheet and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. These potatoes pair beautifully with roasted meats, poultry, or vegetarian mains.
